Hyderabad—On Friday, a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India supporter will wear a realistic fish costume and lie between two “fish” props beneath a banner proclaiming, “Try to Relate to Fish’s Fate. Please Go Vegan.” This action aims to demonstrate that fish are sentient living, feeling beings who feel pain just like we do and don’t want to die. PETA India urges Hyderabad residents to relate to fishes on their plates and to Go Vegan.
Where: In Front of Kasu Brahmananda Reddy National Park Main Gate, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad 500096, Telangana
When: Friday, 28 February 2025, 12 noon sharp
“Every fish who ends up on a plate was an individual who felt pain and fear, just as I and all other animals do,” says PETA India Campaigns Coordinator Utkarsh Garg. “PETA India is calling on people to spare these sensitive aquatic animals the agony of being suffocated, impaled, crushed, and cut open – simply by choosing vegan meals.”
Scientists have confirmed that fish feel pain as acutely as mammals do, have long-term memories, can recognise themselves in a mirror, and communicate using squeaks, squeals, and other low-frequency sounds that humans can only hear with special instruments. More fish are killed for food each year than all other animals combined, often in agonising ways – they’re impaled, crushed, gutted, or dropped into boiling water while still alive and conscious.
Each year, the fishing industry also kills vast numbers of non-target animals, including 720,000 seabirds, 300,000 whales and dolphins, 345,000 seals and sea lions, and 100 million sharks and rays.
Everyone who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals a year, dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint, and reduces their risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. According to the United Nations, a global shift towards eating vegan is necessary to combat the worst effects of the climate catastrophe. PETA India offers a free vegan starter kit for those ready to switch.
PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAIndia.com or follow PETA India on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
