Ahmedabad – This World Vegan Month (November), People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India recognizes Ahmedabad as India’s Most Vegan-Friendly City of 2024. Thanking for fostering an environment that encourages vegan-friendly food offerings, vegan establishments and a growing vegan community, the group has presented a certificate to Smt. Pratibhaben Rakeshkumar Jain, the mayor of Ahmedabad. (Vegan means free from animal-derived ingredients.)
Most Gujarati vegetarian food is naturally vegan if served without ghee, curd, or paneer. Additionally, the city’s top vegan eateries include The Vegan Kitchen, a restaurant offering a variety of plant-powered desi and global dishes, and Satvegan Cafe, which specializes in wholesome and nutritious vegan meals. The city is also home to several vegan cloud kitchens, including Killos by Krrishna Patel, which focuses on vegan Indian sweets and desserts that are both nutritious and delicious; Jaco’s Vegan Hangout, a cloud kitchen for vegan pizza lovers that offers a variety of plant-powered pizzas; and Yummvgo, which provides all-natural popsicles, popcorns, juices, cookies and more. Keventers Vegan Dark Chocolate Frozen Dessert and Plantaway Vegan Gelato are among the vegan products available for sale in the city.
“Gujarati vegan cuisine is already loved, and now Amdavadis and tourists to the city can enjoy a variety of vegan foods offered by its vegan restaurants and eateries,” says PETA India Vegan Outreach Coordinator Dr. Kiran Ahuja. “This includes vegan Gulab Jamun, ice creams, cakes, pizzas and more. It’s now easier than ever to try vegan.”
PETA India notes that Ahmedabad’s vegan impact doesn’t stop at dining: the city is home to vegan fashion designer Purvi Doshi, who creates handcrafted, cruelty-free fashion; Renee cosmetics, a vegan cosmetics brand by Aaksha Goradia that is certified by PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies program; and vegan influencer Style Destino by Shruti Jain, who advocates for cruelty-free and sustainable fashion choices. Additionally, the city hosted the Ahimsa Vegan Festival 2023, an event celebrating vegan living and non-violence, and residents of Ahmedabad can join the Vegans of Gujarat, an online group aimed at connecting and empowering vegans through shared experiences, resources, and events.
PETA India – whose motto reads, “Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAIndia.com or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
