Kochi – During World Vegan Month, a supporter of the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India will pose as a mermaid in Kochi on Wednesday to urge passers-by to consider fish friends and eat vegan.

Where:           Rainbow Hanging Bridge on Abdul Kalam Marg, aka Marine Drive, Ernakulam, Kerala 682031

When:             Wednesday, 20 November, 12 noon sharp

“Fish are playful, intelligent individuals who can feel pain and don’t want to die any more than you or I do,” says PETA India Campaigns Coordinator Atharva Deshmukh. “If you love animals, the best thing you can do is not eat them.”

Scientists have confirmed that fish feel pain as acutely as mammals do, have long-term memories, can recognise themselves in a mirror, and communicate using squeaks, squeals, and other low-frequency sounds that humans can only hear with special instruments. More fish are killed for food each year than all other animals combined, often in agonising ways – they’re impaled, crushed, gutted, or dropped into boiling water while still alive and conscious.

Each year, the fishing industry also kills vast numbers of non-target animals, including 720,000 seabirds, 300,000 whales and dolphins, 345,000 seals and sea lions, and 100 million sharks and rays.

Everyone who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals a year, dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint, and reduces their risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. According to the United Nations, a global shift towards eating vegan is necessary to combat the worst effects of the climate catastrophe. PETA India offers a free vegan starter kit for those ready to switch.

PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAIndia.com or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
