Provocative PETA India Demonstration Will Dish Out Food for Thought About Eating Fish

Kochi – Ahead of International Cat Day (8 August), a People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India “catmonger” wielding a “butcher knife” will sell fresh “kitten meat” to make the point that all animals are sentient beings who feel pain and fear and that anyone who wouldn’t eat a cat shouldn’t eat fish, either.

When:             Wednesday, 7 August 2024, 12 noon sharp

Where:           Rainbow Hanging Bridge on Abdul Kalam Marg, aka Marine Drive, Ernakulam, Kerala 682031

“Fish are smart, sensitive, playful, and inquisitive, yet billions of them are torn from their homes and suffocated or cut open while they’re still alive,” says PETA India Campaigns Coordinator Utkarsh Garg. “PETA India is calling on everyone to leave all animals, regardless of whether they have fur or fins, off their plate.”

Scientists have confirmed that fish feel pain just as acutely as mammals do, have long-term memories, are able to recognise themselves in a mirror, and communicate with each other using squeaks, squeals, and other low-frequency sounds that humans can hear only with special instruments. More fish are killed for food each year than all other animals combined, often in agonising ways – they’re impaled, crushed, gutted, or dropped into boiling water while still alive and conscious.

Everyone who goes vegan saves the lives of nearly 200 animals a year, dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint, and reduces their individual risk of suffering from heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. According to the United Nations, a global shift towards eating vegan is necessary to combat the worst effects of the climate catastrophe. PETA India offers a free vegan starter kit for those ready to make the switch.

PETA India – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETAIndia.com or follow the group on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
